Product Description Mother Nature meets micro-robotics with Hexbug Nano. Designed to look and behave like a real bug, Nano is actually a very cool little robot that uses the physics of vibration to propel itself along and explore its environment. It runs, it skitters in all directions, it flips over and then pops back on its feet. There s no telling what Nano will do next! Real fun with real science. Let your Nano run free or build a special Nano habitat (sold separately) with a whole family of Nanos. Start a Nano nation! The possibilities are endless and so is the fun. Visit the Hexbug website to register and track your Nano, play games with other collectors, download photos and learn more about robotic science. Nanos measure approx. 1+" long, with batteries included. Nano uses 1 AG13 button cell battery (sold separately for $3). You ll go buggy for Hexbug Nano at Brookstone order a swarm today! Deceptive August 1, 2010 Timothy Burke (Swarthmore, PA United States) Actually, I really agree with the review posted by Michigoon: this is basically a digital-age Sea Monkey, in which you're urged to imagine that random actions of a bristlebot have meaning. Watch the promotional video of them "playing" with each other or "learning tricks": that's like saying that falling leaves in autumn have learned a new way to dance as they head for the ground. They haven't learned anything, they don't know anything: it's all random motion. What I'd hoped based on the packaging is that each little nano had some limited unique "genetic" information that could be shared with another nano, and that they'd interact based on that (either via a website or physically) based on that, rather like in some early a-life games like Steve Grand's Creatures. Also, the website which the registration takes you to, the Hand and Stars Challenge, has at best an oblique connection to the product itself. I can't imagine that any kids, even older ones, are going to be able to do much with some of the puzzles and quizzes there--many adults would be baffled. In any event, there's almost no thematic link between the content there and the hexbugs themselves.
Great Potential Cat or Dog Toy! July 18, 2010 Jennifer S. (Seattle, WA) I had never heard of these things before, and bought it hoping it would be a good cat toy. The little thing as about an inch and a half long, and it vibrates at a high speed, then bounces around on rubbery legs. It works on hard surfaces, and bounces off of rugs, shoes, etc, so it keeps moving around. My cats were keenly interested, but more likely to watch it than chase it. We quickly lost it under the stove, but because it keeps buzzing, it wasn't too hard to locate. I think this has great potential for cats, dogs, ferrets and kids.
Pretty slick little idea, attractive design, but a bit pricey July 16, 2010 Cliff Lyles (White, GA USA) I've noticed the Hexbugs every time I visit my local Radio Shack. On the last visit, I noticed the Nano. I'm a sucker for small robots (I collect all kinds), so I decided to do some research on the Nano to see just what it was. After watching a half dozen Youtube videos, I was sold. Went back, picked one up. The Nano seems to me a little pricey for what it is: a small motor trapped in a plastic housing with rubber feet. However, it performs remarkably well to be SO simple. The guys at work have gotten a good laugh out of it. It really reminds me of a cockroach skittering across the floor (but a bit slower, thank goodness). The little thing takes off running, changing directions at random, and popping itself back upright should an obstacle cause it to fall over. Again, considering it'd just a spinning motor with rubber bumpers, that's a pretty impressive trick for something with ZERO external moving parts. I made the mistake of letting it wander into a big pile of stuff while showing it off, and almost never got it back out... it was like trying to catch a real bug! Unless you tear off a few legs, the Nano seems like it should be nigh indestructible. It's lightweight enough that dropping it shouldn't hurt it, especially since the outer shell is rubberized. I haven't let mine run amok very long, so I can't say how long the battery life is going to be. A neat thing I haven't seen anyone mention is the online registration. [...] has a really cool website set up just for the Nanos where you can sign in and register your bug. There are games to participate in (haven't tried them yet), and a virtual Nano "display case" that keeps track of the Nanos you own. Pretty neat for a kid that wants to turn Nano collector (which is kinda' the point, since there are multiple series with different colors and markings). I'm already tempted to go back and buy a second one. Bring the price down to $5 a pop, and I'd say it's a 5 star toy.
Simple, but FUN FUN FUN!!! June 24, 2010 S. Rutgers (Michigander) This is such a cute and entertaining little toy! My six year olds LOVED it. My 2 1/2 year old and 3 year old thinks its great and love to carry them around. One of the bugs stopped working within an hour and the hex bug company helped exchange it. So, great customer service as well.
It Has a Mind of It's Own June 9, 2010 They're really fun, my friend gave me one today and it is awesome. They have a mind of they're own, though. When it turns over, it flips right back up. It's so funny watching them, too. My friend's dog was watching it and sniffing it and going like, "What?" Though I advise you not to use it near a fridge. Because I did and it roamed around there for around 5 minutes until I dug though the dust to get it back. They can go on any flat surface, though it doesn't go very fast on carpets. And if you have a very still arm, it'll even run around on your arm. If you're wondering how it turns, it turns randomly every few seconds. I recommend this toy for anyone who wants to have a little robot pet, a small companion, or anything else. 5 STARS!
